Qualifications You Need to Have to Apply for Skilled Worker Visa

The Tier 2 (General) work visa was replaced by the skilled worker visa in December 2020. The Tier 2 (General) visa is still valid, however, the next visa extension will be granted through the Skilled Worker procedure. For the purposes of determining eligibility for indefinite leave to remain, the two paths will be treated as one.

EEA nationals who do not have EU Settlement Scheme status must apply for the Skilled Worker visa in the same way as non-EU candidates do. Under the Good Friday Agreement, Irish nationals enjoy the right to live and work in the United Kingdom without the requirement for a visa or an EU Settlement status document.

Qualifications for a Skilled Worker Visa:

  • The employment must be on the list of occupations that are eligible.
  • An employment offer from a UK-based company with a current sponsor license.
  • The company must issue you a 'certificate of sponsorship,' which includes information on your prospective role and salary.
  • The pay must exceed a set threshold, which varies depending on the type of employment, your level of experience, and whether or not the position is on the shortage occupation list.

What Is The Duration Of The Skilled Worker Visa?

The skilled worker visa is valid for the time period specified on the sponsorship certificate. There is no time limit. Five years is the longest. If you do not apply for indefinite leave to remain at the conclusion of the five-year period for any reason, it can be extended beyond that.
